"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 2 December 2011"
Today's Blog Title: Faith In God, Is Faith In Jesus"
Today's Scripture Reading: John 12:1-50
Today's Key Verse: John 12:44 "Then Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in Me, believes not in Me, but in Him who sent me."
As the Passover Week approaches, Jesus stays with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus in Bethany. One night Mary comes in anoints the feet of Jesus and wipes them with her hair. She also anoints His head (Matthew 26:7; Mark 14:3). The custom of that time was to anoint the heads of the guest. Anointing Jesus' head was an act of honor; anointing His feet was a display of devotion. Mary's anointing was the first stage of embalming. Whether Mary knew it or not, she anticipating Jesus' death, which would come within the week.
Judas here (the betrayer of Christ), tried to sound spiritual by expressing a concern for the poor that surely he did not feel. He objects, angry that the gift wasn't sold and turned over to the groups treasure-Judas himself. Jesus says to, "Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always."
The crowd that had gathered for the Feast and when they herd that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem took branches of palm trees and cried out, "Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD! The King of Israel!" This was the Sunday before Christ arose and is to this called "Palm Sunday". Up until this point Jesus, Jesus had discouraged expressions of support from the people. Here He allowed public enthusiasm. He entered in Jerusalem on the back of a young donkey which fulfilled prophecy from (Zechariah 9:9) and as such was a symbolic proclamation that Jesus is the Messiah.
Jesus tells his disciples (John 12:20-28a), and the crowds (John 12:28b-36), that He is about to be killed. Instead of answering questions, Jesus gave them a warning, "Walk while you have the light,". He wanted the people to believe and abide in Him. Their unbelief is startling. However Jesus' prediction of His suffering and death did not fit into the peoples idea of the Messiah.
Did the silent minority of leaders who "believed in" Jesus truly believe? Probably so. And many may have taken an open stand for Jesus AFTER His resurrection. Yet there silence was in its self a kind of betrayal. It is hard to see how we as Christians wholeheartedly in Jesus and yet still worry about what the world may think of us.
In the closing of this chapter, Jesus insisted that anyone who believed in Him was at the same time exercising belief in God the Father. Jesus explained that He was the personal manifestation of God. In verse 47 "I do not judge," may be rephrased as "I do not execute judgment." Christ will judge, but at His first coming He did not come to judge but to save.
Today's Hymn: "Joy To The Word"
Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King;
let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing
Joy to the world, the Savior reigns! Let all their songs employ;
While fields, and floods, rocks, hills and plains, Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy
Let no more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make the blessings flow, Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found
He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love
And wonders of his love, And wonders of His Love
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, how thankful we are Father that You are our strength and refuge. Who but you Father can protect us from all that the enemy has to fling at us Your children. May we as You did Jesus forgive those that do us wrong so that You can forgive us of our trespasses. Bless us Father with health, wealth, longevity, spiritual vitality and harmony with You, and those around us in our daily lives.
Amen
Today's Biblical Truth: "It is ironic that the men who put Jesus to death, believed they could put to death permanently One who could raise the death."
