Blog Scripture Reading From Isaiah

"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 30 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "God's People Are Comforted"
Today's Blog Scripture: Isaiah 40:1-31
Today's Key Verse: Isaiah 40:31 "But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint."

I love this Chapter from the Book Of Isaiah, especially verses 28-31.  In this chapter Isaiah is looking beyond Judah's imminent captivity and see a day of salvation yet coming in the future.  This section of Isaiah's prophecy (40:1-48:22) is often called the "Book of Consolation." "Comfort ye" means "repent" and "console," and implies that true repentance must precede divine consolation.  "My people" refers to the people of God who are in a constant relationship with Him.  This designation appears 12 times in Chapters 1-39 and 15 times in Chapters 40-66.  The "voice" that "crieth in the wilderness" is that of John the Baptist (Matthew 3:3; Mark 1:3; Luke 1:23; John 1:23).  By this voice crying from the desert, the people of Judah are called to make the "crooked...straight" and the "rough places plain" in preparation for the coming of the Messiah.

"O Zion..O Jerusalem" calls our attention to the city of David which is to proclaim "good tiding" to the other "cities of Judah."  Certainly it was in this city that the "Good News" of the gospel was first proclaimed to all the world. "Behold your God!" refers to the coming of God incarnate in Jesus Christ "like a shepherd" gathering his sheep (John 10).  The questions  in verses 12-14 are reminiscent of those in Job 38-41, and each implies the answer: "None but God."

In light of the sovereignty of God, human idolatry is pictured as utterly ridiculous.  Through another series of rhetorical questions (verses 18-28)  Isaiah lifts us his readers into the very Presence of God.  The term is the same as that used in Genesis 1:26, where man is created and likeness of God as a personal and moral being.

May God's Love, Peace, Strength and Grace be with you all.

Bible Scripture Reading from Isaiah

"Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 25 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "The Babylonian Captivity Foretold"
Today's Blog Scripture Reading: Isaiah 39:1-8
Today's Blog Verse: Isaiah 39:6 "Behold, the days are coming when all that is your house, and what your father have accumulated until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left," says the LORD."

The incident in this chapter is used by Isaiah to introduce the coming Babylonian captivity.  "Merodach-baladan...king of Babylon" is known in the Akkadian texts as "Mardukapal-iddina."  He conquered Babylon in 721 B.C. with the help of the "Elamites" and ruled there 11 years before being driven out by Sargon II of Assyria in 710 B.C.  After the death of Sargon, he reentered Babylon briefly in 703 B.C. and attempted to rally support against the new Assyrian ruler, "Sennacherib."

Scholars are divided over whether the Babylonian embassy arrived sometime before 710 B.C. or around 701 B.C., but in either case Merodach-baladan obviously sought support against the Assyrian king.  Impressed by the attention of this renegade king, Hezekiah foolishly "showed them...his treasures."  There is no doubt that all this was done in vanity and pride, which the king would live to regret.

Thus Isaiah predicts that "all" these royal treasures "shall be carried to Babylon" in the future, because news of these great treasures would spread throughout Babylon, provoking the Babylonians to come and take them away.

Bible Scripture Reading from Isaiah

"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 23 April 2012''

Today's Blog Title: "Hezekiah's Life Extended"
Today's Blog Reading: Isaiah 38:1-39:8
Today's Blog Key Verse: Isaiah 38:20 "The LORD was ready to save me; Therefore we will sing my songs with stringed instruments, All the days of our life, in the house of the LORD."

Although Hezekiah trusted in God to heal him (Isaiah 38:1-22), he failed when the Babylonian envoys visited him.  After His recovery, he paraded his "own" glory not the "Lord's" (Isaiah 39:1-2).  Thus he implicitly placed his confidence in military strength and political alliances instead of the strength of Almighty God.  How many times do we think that we can handle our problems on our own.  I can imagine Almighty God sitting on His Throne and saying "Really" as we think that we can do it without Him.  I believe that He lets us "try" to do it ourselves, but when we really mess up what we "thought" we can do without God's directions, He is still there waiting to direct our lives to where "HE" wants us to go.  We see that because of Hezekiah's unbelief, Judah would go into exile (Isaiah 39:3-8).

The events covered in today's reading are actual out of chronologically, chapters 36 and 37 serving as a conclusion to the Assyrian period of Isaiah's ministry, and chapters 38 and 39 forming an introduction to the coming Babylonian captivity, which is pictured throughout chapters 40-66.  No indication is given of the nature of Hezekiah's sickness except that he was "sick unto death."  Hezekiah was deeply by Isaiah's stern warning that "thou shall die," Hezekiah "prayed" and "wept sore" and was given an extension of "fifteen years;" God promised that He would deliver Jerusalem out of the hand of the "king of Assyria.  In contrast to Ahaz, Hezekiah accepted the offer of a "sign" (miracle), requesting that the "sun dial of Ahaz" be moved "ten degrees backward" by a supernatural miracle that reversed the falling shadow on the steps (or degree markers) of the sundial.

Bible Scripture Reading from Isaiah

"Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 21 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "Isaiah Assures Deliverance"
Today's Blog Scripture Reading: Isaiah 37:1-38
Today's Blogs Key Verse: Isaiah 37:23 "Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice, And lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel."

Horrified by the demand of the Assyrians, Hezekiah "rent his clothes" (a sign of mourning), and went into "the house of the Lord" (temple), and sent for "Isaiah the prophet."  Recognizing that "this is a day of trouble," the king went to "prayer" for the "remnant" of survivors within the besieged city.  When Isaiah arrived he spoke with great confidence, promising a miraculous deliverance by the Lord, who will send a "blast" (spirit) upon the invaders.  Thus God promised to send a spirit of confusion upon the invaders by means of a "rumor" (report) of the advance of the Egyptians led by "Tirhakak, king of Ethiopia," who was the most famous king of Egypt's Twenty-fifth Dynasty.  This may also explain why Sennacherib himself did not come to Jerusalem to demand its surrender.

Hezekiah took the "letter into the temple and spread it before the LORD" as an act of his total dependence upon God.  In his prayer he acknowledges that the "LORD of hosts" is the "God of Israel" who dwells "between the cherubim," where his glory was manifested on the Ark of the Covenant.  In response to Hezekiah's prayer, God promised a divine reprieve of continued national prosperity when Judah will "take root downward, and bear fruit upward."

God promised Hezekiah that the "king of Assyria...shall not come into this city" because God will defend it "for my servant David's sake" (to protect the Davidic line).  "The angel of the LORD" is Christ Himself who often moved in power on Israel's behalf (Genesis 18:1-33; Joshua 5:13-6:5; Judges 6:11-23).  Just as He had earlier delivered Israel from the Pharaoh of Egypt (Exodus 12:29), so now He delivers Judah from the king of Assyria.  He "went forth and smote" 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. (WOW)  A parallel account is recorded in 2 Kings 19:35 which adds the words "and it came to pass that night" (the night after Hezekiah had prayed).  Hearing of the devastation of his troops at Jerusalem and of the advance of Tirhakah's army, Sennacherib returned to Nineveh, where he was assassinated 20 years later in 681 B.C. by sons "Adrammelech and Sharezer."

Bible Scripture Reading "Book of Isaiah"

"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 17 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "Sennacherib Boasts Against the Lord"
Today's Scripture Reading: Isaiah 36:1-22
Today's Blog Verse: Isaiah 36:7 "But if you say to me, 'We trust in the LORD our God,' it is not He whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, 'You shall worship  before this altar'?"

Standing like a beacon in the middle of Isaiah's prophecies is the Historic Interlude (Isaiah 36:1-39:8), which records the fulfillment of the prophet's predictions concerning the overthrow of Assyria and the rise of Babylon.  This section shifts from poetry to prose and is paralleled to the accounts recorded in 2 Kings 18-12 and 2 Chronicles 32.  Ennacherib ruled Assyria from 705 to 681 B.C.  He immediately ousted the usurper Merodach-baladan of Babylon and invade Judah in 701 B.C.  His initial campaign against the cities of Judah was completely successful, as the Assryians swept through the area with Ashkelon and Lachish suffering the worst.  "The Chronicle of Sennacherib" claims that he captured 46 towns and 200,000 people.  From Lachish he sends officers to Hezekiah to demand the surrender of Jerusalem.  The archaeological discovery of the Taylor Prism reveals Sennacherib's own description of the siege of Jerusalem: "I shut Him (Hezekiah) up like a caged bird within his royal capital."  However the account makes no claim to the actual conquest of Jerusalem or Hezekiah.  The "conduit of the upper pool" is where Hezekiah had dug a new water tunnel to help maintain the water supply for the city.

"Rab-shaeh" is a title meaning "chief aide" and refers to a high court official.  Ironically, he actually came to the very spot where Isaiah met Ahaz 30 years earlier to warn him not to trust in Assyria.  The Rab-shakeh demands that Hezekiah surrender to the "great king...of Assyria."  He shows his ignorance of Hebrews theology by assuming that Hezekiah had torn down the "high places and...altars" of Jehovah, when in reality Hezekiah had brought about a great spiritual revival and destroyed the altars of Baal.  The demand to "give pledges" means to "pay tribute."

Fearful that the words of Rab-shakeh might panic the common people, the Jewish representatives requested that he speak to them in the Syrian language instead of the "Jewish language."  By this period of history Aramaic had become common language of international diplomacy.  "make an agreement with me by a present" means to make an "alliance" to pay tribute to Assyria.

Bible Scripture Reading

"Greetings in the Name of of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 13 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "The Future Glory Of Zion"
Today's Scripture Reading: Isaiah 35:1-10
Today's Key Verse: Isaiah 35:4 "Say to those who are fearful- hearted, "Be strong, do not fear! Behold Your God will come with vengeance, With the recompense of God; He will come and save you."

In Chapter 35 Isaiah the prophet, now turns to a message of hope for the future.  After the great destruction of the Tribulation period will come the blessings of the millennial age, when the "desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose."  In the Messiah's kingdom all spiritual evil and physical catastrophe will be reversed and the land and people will be blessed.

"Carmel and Sharon," the normally fertile regions of Israel, though devastated by the Battle of Armageddon, will once again be fertile and productive.  One day they will blossom more beautifully than the cedar forests of "Lebanon."  The ''highway" is contrasted to the desolate desert and its endless maze of shifting sands.  It will be the "way of holiness" and will be reserved for the "ransomed" and "redeemed" of the Tribulation period who will enter the millennial kingdom.

Images of the dread judgment of God are balanced by this portrait of the joy of the redeemed.  The Apostle Paul reflects the sense of this in Romans 8:18 when he says, "I consider that our present suffering are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us." We as Christians will suffer while society is corrupted by sin and evil men who are bent on oppressing the righteous of God.  But just as God's Day of vengeance is just retribution for the wicked, it introduces the divine repayment of the redeemed for past pain.

Bible Scripture Reading

"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 11 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "Judgment on the Nations"
Today's Scripture Reading: Isaiah 34:1-17
Today's Key Verse: Isaiah 34:1 "Come near, you nations, to hear; And heed, you people! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, The world and all things that come forth from it."

This section of Isaiah's prophecy (34:1-35:10) is again apocalyptic in nature.  The object of God's wrath will be the "nations," the "earth," and the "world."  Here Isaiah depicts the worldwide carnage of the Battle of Armageddon when God's "indignation" and "fury" are poured out on all nations.  So great is this destruction that "mountains shall be melted" and the "host of heaven shall be dissolved" (melt or vanish).  So severe is this devastation that the atmospheric "heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll."  This apocalyptic judgment will be so cataclysmic that it will affect the earth and its atmosphere, and it will usher in a "new heaven and a new earth" (Isaiah 65:17).  "The day of the Lord's vengeance" refers to the battle of Armageddon (Revelation 16:16).  This is the final devastation of the world that culminates at the end of the Tribulation period ("Day of the Lord": Joel 2:2; Zephaniah 1:15; Zechariah 14:1; Malachi 4;5 "Time of trouble": Daniel 12:1; "Time of Jacob's trouble": Jeremiah 30:7; "The wrath to come": 1 Thessalonians 1:10; "Wrath of the Lamb": Revelation 6:16-17).

The theme of divine vengeance and retribution dominates Chapters 34 and 35.  Deuteronomy 32:34-35 says, "it is mine to avenge; I will repay.  In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them."

Vengeance is a judicial concept and it is reserved for God, as moral and Spiritual Judge of His universe, to punish those who persistently reject Him, abandon His ways, and oppress the righteous. Vengeance will be served at history's end (Isaiah 63:1-6), and any present time is marked by a divine forbearance that provides individuals and nations with every opportunity to repent and to believe.

Another major theme found in the Old Testament and seen in Chapters 34 and 35 is that of a great world conflict in which the armies of man are drawn up against the Lord and His people.  This conflict, destined to take place at history's end and to result in the crushing defeat of man's rebellious forces, is described by many of the Old Testament prophets.  Among the the passages which describe that conflict are: Isaiah 2:12-21; 30; 34 and 35; Ezekiel 38-39; Daniel 11:40; Joel 2:1-17.  The very same vision of "the kings of the earth and their armies gathered to make war against the rider on the horse (Christ) and His (heavenly) army" is found in Revelations 19:9.

The real wonder is not that God will certainly punish the unrepentant, but that He chose to vent His anger against sin on His Son Jesus rather than us.  The suffering of Christ for us forever disproves the notion that a God of vengeance could not also be a God of love.

Bible Scripture Reading

"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 9 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "A Prayer In Deep Distress"
Today's Scripture Reading: Isaiah 33:1-24
Today's Key Verse: Isaiah 33:2 "O Lord, be gracious to us, We have waited for You.  Be their arm every morning.  Our salvation also in the time of trouble."

Isaiah's Final "Woe" on Israel and Judah looks beyond the coming Assyrian invasion to the ultimate devastation that will come on the land in the final days.   "You that spoilest" and was "not spoiled is a reference to the Antichrist and his kingdom.  "the time of trouble" refers to the Tribulation period.  The invading army is likely to a horde of "locusts" that shall cover the land of Israel.  "He hath broken the covenant...he regardeth no man" is certainly reminiscent of Daniel 9:27, which refers to the Antichrist.  Thus both prophets foresee a time when the one who has promised to defend Israel will turn against her during the Tribulation period.

God's punishment is pictured as a "devouring fire," which is so awesome that only the righteous will be spared (Matthew 24:22).  The 'king in his beauty" is Christ Himself, and the description of the magnitude of His kingdom is reminiscent of the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21:16.17.  Here the prophet foresees the millennial kingdom where Christ will rule the world in peace.  All that Israel needs will be fulfilled in the Lord her God, who will be the "judge, lawgiver, and king."  Thus in this threefold capacity, "He will save us."

Today's Biblical Truth: "On high refers to God's dwelling place, the place the righteous will go to live with God forever.

Bible Scripture Reading for 5 April 2012

"Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 5 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "A Reign of Righteousness"
Today's Scripture Reading: Isaiah 32:1-20
Today's Key Verse: Isaiah 32:1 "Behold , a king will reign in righteousness, And princes will rule with justice."

The "king who" shall reign in righteousness "Christ Himself."  The prophet foresees a time when government will exist that is totally characterized by "righteousness and judgment." Such a description does not fit Hezekiah, the best of Judah's kings.  Rather, Isaiah sees a greater day coming when the godly character of Judah will be "as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land."  This will be a time when the ignorant will "understand knowledge".  He also sees a time of complete national conversion when the "spitit" will be "poured upon us" (Joel 2:28).

The fifth woe of Isaiah which started in chapter 31 concludes in chapter 32 with a prophecy about leadership (verses 1-8) and its effects (verses 9-20). Paradoxically, generous leaders (verses 1-5) produce abundance and permanent security (verses 16-20), whereas the miserly (verses 6-7) produce false security and desolation (verses 9-14).

Peace is only possible where there is righteousness, and righteousess only where God's spirit transforms humankind.  We are told in Isaiah 57:20-21, "The wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud. 'There is no peace,' says my God, 'for the wicked.'"

Today's Biblical Truth: "If a person mediates on evil, that person will speak and act treacherously."

Bible Scripture Reading

"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 2 April 2012"

Today's Blog Title: "God Will Deliver Jerusalem"
Today's Scripture Reading: Isaiah 31:1-9
Today's Key Verse: Isaiah 31:5 "Like birds flying about, So will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem. Defending, He will deliver it; Passing over, He will preserve it."

In Isaiah 31, Isaiah no returns his attention to again to those who would advocate a pro-Egyptian alliance for the protection of Judah.  he observes that they "stay (lean) on horses and trust in chariots" rather than God who is a "Spirit.."  The use of the symbols of a "lion" and "birds flying" reflects the national symbol of Assyria, the winged lion.  Isaiah calls on his listeners to turn or repent.  This is the very heart of His message to the wayward nation.

You may remember in verse 30 that Isaiah says that one day when the nation of Israel cries out to Almighty God, that God will be gracious to Israel and destroy His peoples enemies.  In today's chapter Isaiah leaves his  bright vision of Israel's distant future and return to the situation of his contemporaries.  He predicts disaster to those who turn from God's help for the help of the Egyptians. but as a token of His ultimate grace, God will shield Jerusalem even now.

This last promise of God was kept, for God ALWAYS keeps His promises.  In the days of Hezekiah, Assyria devastated Israel and invaded Judah, but Jerusalem was rescued by an act of divine intervention.  As God acted then, He will act in the future to keep His others promise.  The present may be dark, but the future is bright for the Jewish people,  Always remember that God is faithful to keep ALL His promises and He will CANCEL you out of His appointment book.  Today too we have the choice between replying on the flesh, or on the Spirit.  Let's choose wisely.

Today's Biblical Truth: "See in the present blessings you enjoy, God's guarantee of a glorious future.
