Today's Blog Title: "A Prayer for Restoration"
Today's Scripture Reading: Psalm 80:1-19
Today's Key Verse: Psalm 80:3 "Restore us, O God; Cause your face to shine, and we shall be saved!"
Psalm 80, is a lament of the community, has especially powerful imagery. The psalm is marked by two metaphors for Israel in its relation to God: (1) the flock of the Good Shepherd, and (2) the vine of the True Vine dresser. Both of these metaphors are used by Jesus of His people in the New Testament (John 10; 15).
Asaph appeals to God, the "Shepherd of Israel", to save His people. Israel is experiencing God's anger and discipline, for He has withdrawn His protection. Again Asaph asks God to restore His people that they might be saved.
The change in the divine name reveals as increasing urgency on Asaph's part for God's intervention: O God (Verse 3), O God of Host (Verse 19), O Lord God of Hosts (verse 19). The word host is a military term meaning "armies" and refers to God's sovereignty over all powers, earthly and heavenly.

I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore
Very deeply stained within, sinking to raise no more;
But the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry,
From the water lifted me, now safe am I.

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, how thankful we are as Christians that Jesus is our Good Shepherd and as we listen for His voice to take up our Cross and come follow Him, how we faithfully take up our Cross and follow Him wherever He wants us to go.
