Bible Scripture Reading for Friday 17 May 2011

"Greetings Everyone in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ"

Today's Blog Title: "A Celebration of Triumph"
Today's Scripture Reading: "Psalm 68:1-35
Today's Key Verses: Psalm 68:19,20 "Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! Our God is the God of salvation; And to God the Lord belong escapes from death."

David in this psalm celebrates God's power and goodness before reviewing His historic acts on behalf of Israel.  These culminate in God's choice of Jerusalem as the site of the sanctuary.  The result of this triumph is celebrated by God's people, who now call on Him to scatter their enemies and praise Him for His majestic rule.

The significance of this majestic hymn is two fold: (1) it reiterates in a beautiful way the Lord's election of Israel as a basis from which His rule and blessing flow to the earth and (2) it reveals a growing understanding of the person of God of Israel.  A study of the names of God alone in the psalm establishes the second point: (1) God (verse 1) (2) His name JAH (verse 4) (3) the Almighty (verse 14) (4) the Lord (verses 16) (5) the Lord (verse 19 which is a different Hebrew word than from the one in verse 16) and God the Lord (verse 20)

Psalm 16:18 is cited as an illustration of Christ's bestowing spiritual gifts on His church.  The Old Testament text pictures God as a victorious warrior returning to Mount Zion (he ascended up on high) leading Israel defeated foes in triumphal procession (he led captivity captive); He then distributes to Israel the spoils of war (gave gifts unto men).  Similarly, when Jesus returned to heaven ("He ascended up high"), He conquered satan and all his demonic horde ("he led  captivity captive"), and distributed gifts to His church ("gave gifts unto men).

This psalm has six parts:(1) a call for God to rise in judgment against the wicked (verses 1-3); (2) a call for the people of God to praise Him for His wonders and mercies (verses 4-6); (3) a review of the works of God on behalf of His people (verses 7-14); (4) a celebration of the city of God and His saving work (verses 1-20); (5) an anticipation of the final victory of God over all His enemies (verses 21-27); (6) an anticipation of the worship of God by the peoples of the earth (verses 28-35).

Today's Hymn: "Almost Persuaded" (verse 1)

"Almost persuaded", now to believe
 "Almost persuaded" Christ to receive
Seems now some soul to say
"Go, Spirit, go Thy way
Some more convenient day
On Thee I'll call."

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit  How thankful we are that through You we have the victory over the enemy.  How wonderful it is to know that You are faithful and good at the promises You make, and that You are there to carry us and strengthen us when we need it the most.  May You give us the words to go out and speak Boldly as Peter when he said, "Thou art the Christ, the son of the Living God."
                                                                                                                  Amen

Have a God Filled and Spirit Led Day.  Go in Peace and Serve the Lord with Gladness.  Love God More Today and always remember that when you have a spiritual dilemma in your life and you tell out, "I CAN'T",  God Whispers to you, "BUT I CAN".
