"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 23 September 2011"
Today's Blog Title: "A Timeless Truth"
Today's Scripture Reading: Romans 4:1-25
Today's Key Verse: Romans 4:3 "For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believes God, and it was accounted to Him for righteousness."
In Romans 4 Paul demonstrates from sacred history that salvation always has been a gift of God received by faith. Righteousness was "credited to" Abraham because he "believed God" (verses 1-3). David says the same thing in speaking of the blessedness of forgiven sin (verses 4-8). Abraham was credited with righteousness before his circumcision, that unique sign that marked a person off as a Jew in Old Testament Times. Thus the Gentiles can look to Abraham's experience as a precedent (verses 9-12). Since the promises given Abraham and transmitted to his offspring, Israel, are rooted in faith, not in the law, the Jew too must rely on faith rather than works (verse 13-17).
What then is the nature of that faith Abraham exercised? It was simply confidence that God was able to do what He promised and that He would surely keep His word. When we believe God's promises of salvation in Jesus, we too are credited with a righteousness we DID NOT and COULD NOT earn on our own (verses 18-25).
By his faith, Abraham, acknowledged that God was faithful and powerful enough to keep His promises. Glorifying God means declaring who God is. Paul in this chapter says that God's promises to Abraham were founded on his faith so that it would be acknowledged that salvation was only through grace, that is, God's favor. Since the promise was not based on adherence to any law or the performance of any ritual, such as circumcision, Abraham is the forefather of all who believe.
Today's Hymn: "Believe and Obey"
Press onward. press onward, if you would secure, the rest of the faithful, abiding and sure
The gift of salvation is offered today, To all who confess Him, believe, and obey
Believe and obey, believe and obey, the Master is calling, no longer delay
The light of his mercy shines bright on the way, of all who confess Him, believe, and obey.
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, how wonderful it is place our faith and hope in Thee like Abraham, and also like Abraham to be called a friend of God. May our faith in You Father, be strong in the good times of our lives and even more so in the trials and tribulations that we face. Thank You for Your Love, Mercy and Marvelous, Wonderful and Saving Grace.
Amen
