"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 20 September 2011"
Today's Blog Title: "Faith is the Beginning and the End"
Today's Scripture Reading: Romans 1:1-32
Today's Key Verse: Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek."
In the opening verse of Romans 1, Paul identifies himself as an apostle, set apart to spread a Gospel which brings grace and peace from God. Paul share his desire to visit Rome and defines the theme on which he is writing: a gospel which brings salvation and righteousness to everyone who believes.
Salvation is desperately needed by a race which rightly lies under divine wrath. For humanity has reacted against god, rejecting the knowledge all men have of Him, preferring to create their own gods and follow a pathway which leads inexorably to even greater depravities.
Cast against the dark background of lost man's corrupt society, what "Good News" the Gospel is! Humanity has not chosen to know God. But God has chosen to reveal His love and grace to man anew.
From "faith to faith" in verse 17 means faith is at the beginning of the salvation process, and it is the goal as well. When a person first exercises faith in Christ, that person is saved from the penalty of sin and declared righteous. As the believer lives by faith, God continues to save him or her from the power of sin to live righteously.
Verses 29-32 contain one of the most extensive lists of sins in all of the Scriptures. The list shows the exhaustive sweep of human moral depravity. While society tends to rationalize certain sins, God judges all sin. These sins particularly reveal our rebellious hearts. All, without exception, deserves God's punishment.
Today's Hymn: "Thy Word Is A Lamp Unto My Feet"
When I feel afraid, think I've lost my way, still You're there, right beside me
Nothing will I fear, as long as you are near, please, be with me to the end
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, may we open our hearts about the truths of our loving and faithful God. May we not suppress the truth about You Heavenly Father, and realize that You are our loving Creator and that You deserve our praise and worship. We as Christians see how nature speaks about your marvelous Creation. From the design of the human cell to the majestic strength of the Rocky Mountains, all of what You have created testify to Your wisdom and power.
Amen
