"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord Savior Jesus Christ for 12 August 2011"
Today's Blog Title: "A Celebration of God's Word" (Part 1)
Today's Scripture Reading: Psalm 119:1-48
Today's Key Verses:
Psalm 119:9 "How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word."
Psalm 119:11 "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You."
Psalm 119:46 "I will speak of Your testimonies also before kings, and I will not be ashamed."
Psalm 119 is well known as the longest chapter in the Bible. Psalm 119 is an acrostic psalm in praise of the Word of God and its role in the life of the believer. An acrostic follows an alphabetic arrangement. In the original Hebrew each line in each of the 22 sections of this psalm begins with the same Hebrew letter. These letters are shown in the NIV text, and the English spelling of its name is provided.
There are a number of terms that are repeated in this psalm. These are synonyms referring back to the Word of God. They are as follows:
Torah (Law) 25 times: Usually the word here indicates the whole body of Scripture's teaching as found in the writings of Moses.
Miswah (Commands) 21 times: This refers to clear, definite directives issued by God.
Huqqim (Decrees) 21 times: This Hebrew word means "things inscribed" and thus established in law.
Mispot (Judgments) 19 times: This Hebrew word means a binding judicial decision that establishes a precedent.
Piqqudim (Precepts) 21 times: This word found only in poetry, is a synonym for edit or precept.
'edah (Statute) 23 times: This is a sober and serious expression of God's standards for our behavior.
Dabar (Word) 20 times): This means a revelation, but also is used specifically of the Ten Commandments God gave Israel through Moses.
'Imrah (Saying) 19 times: Another poetic word, often used instead of dabar.
Derek (Way) 11 times: A metaphor for the way of life believers are to live.
'Orah (Path) Another metaphor of life style.
In the next three days we will see that throughout Psalm 119 David expresses the joy that he finds in Scripture, He calls it "the word of truth" (Psalm 119:43) and in so doing makes a vitally important statement about its nature. In the Hebrew "truth" and "faithfulness" share a common root, 'emet. This root affirms that the statement, thing, or person which is true or faithful is in harmony with reality.
That is, that the true can be relied upon because when measured by the actual, it corresponds exactly. To say that the Scripture is true means that we cam trust it completely, for it pierces all men's illusions and portrays reality as God know it and as it really is.
Today's Hymn: "Give Of You Best To The Master"
Give of your best to the Master, give Him first place in your heart
Give Him first place in your service, consecrate every part
Give, and you will be given, God His beloved gave
Gratefully seeking to serve Him, give Him the best that you have
Give of your best to the Master; give of the strength, of your youth
Clad in Salvation's full armor; join in the battle for truth
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, thank you for your constant and overwhelming love for us. May Your praises be upon my heart and upon my lips. How we appreciate the intimacy of being close to you and having your arms around us and guiding us. May we as David hid your words in our hearts that we might no sin against Thee.
Amen
Today's Biblical Truth: "God's path leads to life, and His ways are a reflection of His good character."
Have a God Filled and Spirit Led Day. Go in Peace and Serve the Lord our God with Gladness. Love God More Today and always remember that when you have a spiritual dilemma in your life and you yell out, "I CAN'T", God Whispers to you, BUT I CAN".
"By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren." (1 John 3:16)
Have a God Filled and Spirit Led Day. Go in Peace and Serve the Lord our God with Gladness. Love God More Today and always remember that when you have a spiritual dilemma in your life and you yell out, "I CAN'T", God Whispers to you, "BUT I CAN".
