Bible Scripture Reading for Tuesday 23 August 2011

"Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for 23 August 2011"

Today's Blog Title: ""Laboring and Prospering with the Lord" (Day 8 of the "Songs of Ascent", or "Pilgrim Songs").
Today's Scripture Reading: "Psalm 127:1-5
Today's Key Verse: Psalm 127:1 "Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain."

Psalm 127 is the 8th of the "Songs of Ascent", is a wisdom song, and is one of only two written by Solomon (the other being Psalm 72).  With the words "unless the Lord builds", Solomon asserts that life apart from God is not worth living.  Even building a house is useless if the Lord is not in the process.  The phrase "the bread of sorrows" captures the essence of those removed from a sense of the Lord in their lives.

This psalm is a praise for family.  This psalm lies at the midpoint of the "Songs of Ascent".  This psalm is filled with a sense of joy that the Israelites took in their children.   Children are God's gifts and was the blessing of a home in ancient times and gave a person a measure of pride in the community.  The words, "a full quiver" was a mark of God's blessing.

The principle of this psalm is that all human efforts are in vain unless they have God's blessing.  The principle is applied to four areas (1) building a house (verse 1); (2)  guarding a city (verse 1); (3) working long hours (verse 2); (4) and having children (verses 3-5).   It is possible to accomplish all of these things without God's blessing, but it is not possible to accomplish all of these things with God's blessing, BUT it is NOT possible to accomplish them purposefully and with eternal value WITHOUT God's blessing.

This psalm includes, incidentally, two practical reasons for having children: (1) they bring you joy and (2) they protect you).

Today's Hymn: "Change My Heart O God"

Change my heart, O God, make it ever true,
Change my heart, O God, May I be like You
You are the potter, I am the clay;
Mold me and make me, this is what I pray
Change my heart, O God, make it ever true
Change my heart, O God, may I be like You

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, as we serve you Father may your continued blessing be us and our families.  May we dedicate our lives you as parents and train our child in Your ways so that when they grow old they might not depart from it.  Change our hearts Lord that we might always be like You.
                                                                                                                                    Amen

"But if walk in the light, as He is the light we fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin." (1 John 1:7)
